  2. Guerin, used as a vaccine to confer active
  3. immunity to tuberculosis (TB). BCG was
  4. developed in France after World War I from
  5. live bovine TB bacilli. These bacteria were
  6. bred in the laboratory over many generations
  7. until they became attenuated (weakened). Each
  8. inoculation contains just enough live,
  9. attenuated bacilli to provoke an immune
  10. response: the formation of specific
  11. antibodies. The recipient then has lifelong
  12. protection against TB.
